Berry French Toast Bake

Ingredients
  

For the French Toast Bake
  • 8 slices Bread stale or day-old bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2 cups Milk whole milk recommended
  • 4 Eggs
  • 1/4 cup Granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp Cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp Nutmeg
  • 1 cup Mixed berries fresh or frozen
For Topping (Optional)
  • 2 tbsp Butter melted
  • 1/4 cup Brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp Cinnamon

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Arrange the bread cubes in the prepared baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are moistened. Gently press down any floating bread.
  5. Scatter the mixed berries over the top of the bread mixture.
  6. If making the topping, combine the melted butter, brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon in a small bowl. Mix until crumbly, then sprinkle over the berries.
  7. Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the French toast is puffed, golden brown, and cooked through. A knife inserted into the center should come out clean.
  8. Let the bake cool for about 10 minutes before serving. Serve warm.

Notes

You can prepare this bake the night before. Cover and refrigerate, then bake in the morning. Adjust baking time as needed. Serve with maple syrup, whipped cream, or powdered sugar.
