Ingredients

For the Strata
  • 6-8 slices plain white sandwich bread crusts removed, one side buttered
  • 2 cups Jack cheese shredded
  • 2 cups cheddar cheese shredded
  • 12 ounces pork sausage crumbled and browned
  • 1 4-ounce can green chiles
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ teaspoon dry mustard

Equipment

  • 9x13 baking dish
  • Mixing bowl

Method

  1. Remove the crusts from your bread slices. Lightly butter one side of each slice.
  2. Place the bread slices, butter side down, in a 9x13 baking dish. Cover the bottom of the pan completely, cutting pieces to fit like a puzzle if needed.
  3. Sprinkle the shredded Jack and cheddar cheeses evenly over the bread. Layer the browned sausage over the cheese, followed by the green chiles.
  4. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk the eggs. Add the milk and all seasonings. Combine well. Whisk one final time and immediately pour the mixture evenly over the assembled casserole.
  5. Cover the dish tightly and refrigerate overnight.
  6. In the morning, preheat your oven to 350℉. Bake the strata uncovered for 50-60 minutes, or until the center is puffed and set, and the edges are golden brown.
  7. Let the strata cool for about 10 minutes before serving.
